FISHING GEAR AND METHODS

FISHING is the art/ knowledge/skills of capturing/ collecting aquatics organisms out of their habitats.

FISHING GEAR is the tool with which aquatic resources are captured out their habitats.

FISHING METHODS is the way how aquatic organisms are captured out of their habitats.

1. NETTING  FISHING  METHODS.

Is a type of fishing equipment that using netting gears in fishing. The net is typically made of nylon or other synthetic fibers, and it may be either cast into the water or set in a stationary position.

• The net used for fishing purpose in Tanzania must be of acceptable and recommendable size so as not contravening with the fisheries laws and regulations, currently law no 22 of 2003 and regulations of 2009.

NOTE: some nets are illegal fishing gears nevertheless meeting all criteria within fisheries law in Tanzania e.g. monofilament and beach seine nets.

2. HOOKING METHOD

▪The use of hooking gears in fishing. The basic principle of this method involves attaching a baited hook to the end of a fishing line and casting it into the water in hopes of enticing a fish to bite.

NOTE: Hooks can be illegal fishing gears depending on the size of hook used.

The acceptable size of hooks in Tanzania are 9,10,11  (the smaller the size of hook the larger the number and vice versa)

3.TRAPPING METHOD

▪The use  of traps to perform fishing. In this method the gear is set or stationed in the water for a certain period to trap moving fish in the water.

▪The use of hand held equipments to perform fishing, eg   knives,Arrows,Spears and  Harpoons

6.DREDGING FISHING METHOD

•      The use of dredges to perform fishing. 
•    Definition of Dredges

  An iron or net basket with a hard rectangular frame at the opening. This gear is dragged or pushed along the sea bed usually to collect molluscs such as mussels, oysters, scallops, clams, etc. The shellfish are held in an attached bag or sieve which allows the water, sand or mud to pass through.
